Established in 2007, the creation of the first vehicle rental company designed to be kinder to the environment was a reaction to the global need to tackle climate change with positive action. How does a Green Motion franchise work?

As the only 100 per cent franchised car and van rental company in the UK, Green Motion have a proven, scalable business model for new franchisees to take advantage of, and the company aims to offer a turnkey solution. Offering business planning and financial advice along with training, marketing and operational support, a Green Motion franchise agreement lasts for five years, and is renewable after that, with almost all current franchisees choosing to renew.

Each new Green Motion franchisee is supported in establishing a fleet of vehicles and the necessary fleet insurance at a low cost thanks to close relationships with fleet leasing companies. Green Motion have improved supply terms with many of the major motor manufacturers to ensure competitive pricing, and will actively assist with location sourcing and shop fitting to get each new franchise ready for launch.

Once the new business is up and running, it is up to the franchise owner to decide whether to target commercial or retail customers in order to build their business.

How much does a Green Motion franchise cost?

The Green Motion franchise fee is currently £39,500, and £80-100,000 of working capital is required, taking the total investment required to set up and open a Green Motion franchise to £140,000. Once the franchise is in operation, franchisees pay a six per cent royalty on turnover per month.

What training is provided for Green Motion franchisees?

New franchise owners are offered extensive in-depth training in every area of the Green Motion business by the management team prior to their new business launching and into the first week of business. Training covers operational aspects of the franchise along with customer service, web systems, sales and marketing, business development and fleet information. Franchisees also receive one to one training in an existing franchise location for a practical, hands on experience prior to the launch.

What marketing support is provided for Green Motion franchisees?

Green Motion national marketing is run through a marketing agency with a wide range of distribution channels including travel brands such as Expedia and Rentalcars. Franchisees also benefit from email campaigns to the company database, SEO and Google AdWords accounts. When a new Green Motion franchise is launched, a PR campaign, local advertising and leafleting and other marketing activities requested by the franchisee are assisted by Green Motion, with some financial support available. A micro-website allows each franchise to directly advertise their own branch.

What else do you get for your Green Motion franchise fee?

Franchisees receive access to Green Motion’s online fleet management system, ‘Wheels’, which allows them to track and analyse fleet usage as well as record customer data and produce rental agreements and paperwork. This operational data is monitored centrally by Green Motion Head Office, allowing them to provide the relevant ongoing support, advice and assistance to the franchisee as needed.

A secure online reservation and payment system is accessible by both corporate and leisure customers.

Do Green Motion franchisees need industry experience?

Not necessarily – an entrepreneurial spirit and clean, full driving licence are more important. Green Motion are looking for ambitious individuals with management or sales experience to develop new franchise locations, and can offer the training and expertise to launch a successful franchise business. Great communication, motivational and people skills are also essential, along with an interest in environmental concerns.

Will I meet other Green Motion franchisees?

Yes. Green Motion UK run two or three get togethers a year for franchisees to meet each other. The main events have a conference feel with presentations, but feedback and social sessions allow franchisees to swap details and stay in touch.

Is running a Green Motion franchise a full time job?

Usually. The Green Motion franchise model is based on a franchise owner and operator. While many franchisees undertake both the management and day to day operations of the territory, others hire a larger number of staff to run the business and instead focus on the strategy.

Now operating in 29 countries worldwide, Green Motion is currently developing its UK franchise network which is split into airport and ‘downtown’ city locations.
