Parents who want a rewarding work-life balance should consider a direct selling opportunity, says Lynda Mills, director of the Direct Selling Association

We regularly see peaks and troughs in the amount of new direct sellers joining the industry and this time of year often sees a significant surge in new sellers.

As the children finish school for the summer holidays, there is usually a general sense of panic among parents about how they will manage work commitments while entertaining the children all summer.

Childcare is an expensive necessity for many families in this situation.

However, this is not the case for those working in the direct selling industry.

Earn money from home
This is predominantly because of the flexibility direct selling offers - it can be full time, part time, mornings, evenings or afternoons.

It’s such a versatile industry that parents tend to enjoy the straightforward way they can earn an income around family life.

The social element of direct selling is also a draw for parents.

Direct sellers generally start off selling to their friends and family, extending to their wider community and also via increasingly popular parties - where direct selling consultants will demonstrate products in a client’s home before offering them for sale to the assembled group.

DSA members have reported a 120 per cent increase in revenues generated this way between 2009 and 2011.

Home selling parties now account for 27.8 per cent of DSA member companies’ £1.4 billion revenue and are worth £390 million to the UK economy annually.

We also tend to see a slight peak in the amount of people joining the industry during the autumn.

After a busy summer juggling childcare with work, we often see parents opting to become direct sellers once the children go back to school, proving that direct selling holds all year round appeal to parents who want a rewarding work-life balance that is hard to beat.
