What type of training will a new franchisee receive from the franchisor?
This will depend on the terms of the franchise agreement. Usually a franchisor will provide initial training to ensure the franchisee has the right skills, knowledge and tools to operate and manage the business effectively from the outset. Any initial training is usually undertaken before the franchisee is allowed to operate the franchise and, depending on the particular business, may be face-to-face, on-site, at the franchisor or other network franchisee’s premises or, in some cases, online. In addition to operating the franchise in accordance with any initial training provided, the franchisee must run the business in compliance with the operations manual. The franchisor may provide continuing operational and/or technical assistance during the term of the franchise agreement and such assistance is often by way of updates, which are implemented through an update to the operations manual. These can cover matters such as new techniques, products and services. Implementation may involve further training, which is usually provided free of charge by the franchisor, although the franchisee will be responsible for the cost of its own staff attending. Many franchisors will also offer their franchisees the opportunity to seek further ongoing training if required. This additional training will usually be provided at an additional cost.
