David Watts, a hugely successful businessman, tells us about his career and how he became head of Chrysalis Partners
Like many of you, I started my career in a pretty ‘ordinary’ job, within the printing industry. However, even at the age of 22, I knew that I was capable of achieving much more, so I decided to start my first business. I wanted more than just to simply build wealth for others, I wanted to be in control. I made some money, but to be honest not a great deal. My ‘weakness’ back then was a lack of commercial sales experience, so I sold my printing company and learned how to grow a business, negotiate better and close deals more effectively. I was hungry for knowledge and learned fast, soon discovering that growing sales for others came easily to me. By the age of 28 I had joined a small technology business with a US parent company who wanted aggressive growth, but were haemorrhaging cash and generating sales revenues of less than £100,000. Within six months I had become MD and by the time I decided to spread my wings and create some personal wealth, I had taken that business to just shy of £10million.
Now again, possibly like you, I researched many franchise opportunities across all manner of disciplines, however the one that kept coming back to the top of the pile was Business Coaching and Consulting. Why? The start up costs are very reasonable, the overheads are minimal and the potential upside is huge. The size of the target market (literally millions of UK businesses) made the decision easy - I recruited sixteen or so Business Consultants/Coaches over a couple of years and enjoyed the business immensely.
In 2015, I decided that I wanted to bring a new approach to Business Coaching, offering one-to-one Coaching to more clients than ever - a service not readily available in the marketplace at that time.
