Can I own more than one franchise?
Whether or not you can own more than one franchise depends on the type of franchise that you operate and the approach of the franchisor. Some franchisors want to recruit franchisees who will both own and operate the business. In these kinds of franchise businesses you will probably find a clause in the franchise agreement requiring the franchisee to devote the whole of their time and efforts to the business. However, in some franchises the franchisee’s role is in a management capacity. For example, it is often the case in fast food businesses for franchisees to have multiple outlets of the same brand. These outlets are managed by individual store managers and it is the franchisee’s responsibility to recruit and train suitably experienced staff and ensure that they operate the outlets in accordance with the system. A franchisee in this situation, if they had adequate resources, could operate more than one franchise. If a franchisor franchised more than one franchise brand, it may be willing to offer a franchisee a franchise of more than one brand. Another option is co-branding. This is a technique that has been used internationally and involves the same franchisee operating a number of complementary franchises from the same premises.
