Can I legally operate a franchise from home?
Fundamentally, you will need to look at the provisions of the relevant franchise agreement to see whether operating from home is permitted. Even if your franchisor will allow you to operate from home, there are other issues that may need to be considered. For example, you may need consent from your local council or local authority to use your home, which will be registered for residential use, as a business. It may also be a requirement of your franchise agreement that you need to put signs outside your house publicising the business. If this is the case, it is likely that your local council or local authority will impose restrictions on you doing so and you will need to check any requirements with them. One other consideration is your relationship with your neighbours. The impact on them and their reaction to you operating a business from your home will generally depend on the actual nature of the business. If you are considering operating your franchise from home, you should discuss the possibility with the franchisor and your local council and/or local authority before you sign the franchise agreement.
